Covering 12,500 square km, the Fiordland National Park (formally established in 1952) is the largest such park in New Zealand, and occupies almost the entire south-west corner of South Island. Bristling with mountains, narrow fiords, deep coves, a myriad of small islands, and few people except for the odd hunter, tramper and tourist, Fiordland is almost a land apart and as untouched and unspoiled as you can get.
Fiordland is also the corner-stone of the larger Te Wahipounamu (26,000 square Km) World Heritage area which was created in 1990
